Trump reported some involvement in 565 companies and organizations but had resigned his positions in all of them as of January 19, 2017 (the day before his swearing in as President).  This form also confirms he sold all of his stock holdings. His total income was between $600 and $650 million (specific totals are not required and as a result the form only lists ranges), including $288 million from golf courses, $11 million from Miss Universe, and several million from books.  International assets earned Trump "at least $38 million." On January 23 2017 the non-profit legal watchdog group Citizens For Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a similar suit, claiming Trump has violated the Emoluments Clause. 30 Democratic Senators and 166 Democratic congresspeople filed a lawsuit on June 14 2017 also for violating the Emoluments Clause, a lawsuit that also has the largest number of congressional plantiffs in history. The emoluments clause states "no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign State."  Accepting gifts or other types of payments (i.e. revenue from businesses both domestically and abroad from foreign customers) by Trump and his businesses is, according to each of these lawsuits, a violation of the Emoluments Clause. The "lawsuit filed by D.C. and Maryland against President Trump over his alleged business conflicts has been expanded to include Trump in his personal capacity as a businessman" meaning Trump was issued a personal summons and will be directly included in this lawsuit.

On Thursday June 8 2017, the House of Representatives passed the "Financial CHOICE Act".  This act removes a variety of banking industry regulations enacted through Dodd-Frank:

[The act] would chip away at about 40 provisions and regulations put in place via Dodd-Frank, including regulators’ authority to both wind down a financial institution perceived to be on the brink of failure and to identify an institution as a risk to the economy. The bill would remove a significant amount of authority from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was created by Dodd-Frank, ceding power to President Donald Trump to fire the leader of the watchdog agency. Congress would also have final say over the agency’s budget

The act would also: The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) "estimates that enacting the legislation would reduce federal deficits by $24.1 billion over the 2017-2027 period".  However, much of this reduction comes from the elimination of the Orderly Liquidiation Fund, which is a federal source of capital used to address failing (or potentially failing) financial firms.

  • $3.6 trillion in spending reductions (over 10 years)
  • $250 billion in deficit savings (over 10 years) associated with health care reform
  • Deficit neutral tax reform (tax rates yet to be finalized)
  • $54 billion more in defense spending, (offset by a $54 billion reduction in non-defense spending)
  • $2.6 billion investment in a border wall with Mexico
Non-defense services and agencies experience significant budget reductions under Trump's budget proposal.  The Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs are the only ones to see increases.   More details on individual department budget changes are available here. In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord -- (applause) -- thank you, thank you -- but begin negotiations to reenter either the Paris Accord or a really entirely new transaction on terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers.  So we’re getting out.  But we will start to negotiate, and we will see if we can make a deal that’s fair.  And if we can, that’s great.  And if we can’t, that’s fine....

As of today, the United States will cease all implementation of the non-binding Paris Accord and the draconian financial and economic burdens the agreement imposes on our country.  This includes ending the implementation of the nationally determined contribution and, very importantly, the Green Climate Fund which is costing the United States a vast fortune.

Trump cited reasons for withdrawal being financial burdens, job losses (however he does not include new green jobs), legal liability (there is no legal liability mechanism or punishment process in the agreement), and also that the agreement is unfair to the United States. The Paris Climate Agreement seeks to reduce global temperature rise but allows member countries to internally define targets, initiatives, resources available, and processes. Conflicting reports alleged the U.S. may not be pulling out of the agreement, but the White House reconfirmed this plan on Saturday September 16, 2017.  However, U.S. inclusion in the agreement "will not officially conclude per the terms of United Nations-brokered agreement until just before the 2020 US election." The United States will be the only country not included in this agreement. According to the agreement, a country cannot formally initiate the withdrawal process until 3 years after signing of the agreement, which would be November 3, 2019.  The withdrawal process includes a 1 year waiting period, meaning the earliest the U.S. could formally leave the agreement is November 3, 2020.

Member countries participate through individual and internal goals, processes, and initiatives, referred to as "nationally determined contributions".  In other words, this agreement doesn't specifically note the required actions of each country but rather allows each country to define these limits internally. Countries will be required to report on progress at a global stocktake every 5 years (starting in 2018). As of early 2017, the agreement was signed by 195 countries but has only currently been officially ratified by 148.  The only countries not to sign are Syria and Nicaragua. "However, Nicaragua signed the agreement in October and, according to Climate Tracker, Syria has pledged to sign the agreement as of November 7th, 2017." President Trump announced the U.S. will withdraw from the Paris Agreements, making the United States the only country not included in this agreement.
