Trump, While Thinking Of “This Russia Thing”, Fires FBI Director James Comey
President Trump fired FBI director James Comey on Tuesday May 9 2017. According to a statement by Press Secretary Sean Spicer, “President Trump acted based on the clear recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions“.
The next day, President Trump met with Russian officials in the White House. According to a document summarizing this meeting [read to the New York Times by an American official], Trump said to the Russian officials “I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job…I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.”
In an interview, Trump noted he “was going to fire him regardless of recomendations [from Rosenstein and Sessions]“also noting several times that he was not under investigation by the FBI for collusion with the Russian government.
Trump also noted that the FBI investigation into connections between Trump and Russia were on his mind when he fired Comey. He stated in the same interview: “when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, ‘You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story“.
