Jared Kushner’s Lawyer Confirms Use Of Private Email Server, But Use Appears To Be Acceptable
Jared Kushner’s lawyer confirmed publicly that he used a private email account, noting in a statement that “fewer than a hundred emails from January through August were either sent to or returned by Mr. Kushner to colleagues in the White House from his personal email account” and all non-personal emails were forwarded to Kushner’s official White House email account.
Use of a private email server, as long as emails do not contain classified information, is acceptable under the Presidential Records Act as long as these emails are forwarded to an official White House email account to be preserved for the public record, for oversight, and for any possible investigations of government activity. It is unclear if emails were actually forwarded to a government account.
Senior White House staff members were using private email servers managed through the Republican National Committee (The official political organization of the Republican Party) at rnchq.org for at least several days during the beginning of the Trump Administration.
