President Trump Bans Transgender Individuals From Entering Military, Halts Use Of Resources To Fund Sex Reassignment Treatments
On August 25, 2017 President Trump issued a memorandum “to return to the longstanding policy and practice on military service by transgender individuals that was in place prior to June 2016.”
“In June 2016, President Barack Obama allowed transgender soldiers to serve openly and receive related medical treatment.” President Trumps reversal of Obama’s order effectively bans transgender individuals from entering military service, effective January 1, 2018.
The memorandum also issues a “halt [of] all use of DoD or DHS resources to fund sex reassignment surgical procedures for military personnel, except to the extent necessary to protect the health of an individual who has already begun a course of treatment to reassign his or her sex.”
On October 20, 2017, a Federal Judge blocked this ban, citing lack of facts and concerns over the intent of the ban.
