Trump Administration Seeks To Eliminate Recognition Of Transgender People Under More Strict Gender Definitions Recently Proposed
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is seeking to more strictly define gender “‘on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.’ The agency’s proposed definition would define sex as either male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the genitals that a person is born with, according to a draft [memo from the Department of HHS] reviewed by The [New York] Times. Any dispute about one’s sex would have to be clarified using genetic testing.”
“The move would remove recognition of and protections for transgender people under U.S. civil rights laws promoted by the prior administration of President Barack Obama in health care, schools and the military.”
Approximately 1.4 million U.S. adults identify as transgender.
