In 2014 the Mexican government announced a new ‘Southern Border Program’ aimed at increasing apprehensions and deportations of migrants from Central America and other parts of the world destined for the U.S.”

During the first two full calendar years of the program (2015 and 2016), Mexican authorities apprehended 198,141 and 186,216 migrants respectively (data for 2017 and 2018 is not yet available).  Apprehensions were predominately of Central American origin.
