During a meeting in the Oval Office on Thursday January 11, 2017 about protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries, President Trump stated “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” He then suggested "the United States should instead bring more people from countries such as Norway, whose prime minister he met with Wednesday" and "from Asian countries because he felt that they help the United States economically."

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), who was present at the meeting, confirmed the statements made by the President. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who was also present in the meeting, stated "Following comments by the President, I said my piece directly to him yesterday." Several African countries condemned President Trump's statements, as did several other African ambassadors to the United Nations, with many calling for retractions and an apology.
