Trump Signs Executive Order Known As “Global Gag Rule” Or The “Mexico City Policy” Prohibiting Funding for Abortions Or Abortion Related Services
Trump signed an executive order known as the “Mexico City Policy” and the “global gag rule” which prohibits funding for “international nongovernmental organizations that offer or advise on a wide range of family planning and reproductive health options if they include abortion ― even if U.S. dollars are not specifically used for abortion-related services“.
“The United States spends about $600 million a year on international assistance for family planning and reproductive health programs, making it possible for 27 million women and couples to access contraceptive services and supplies.”
However, in 1973 “Congress adopted the so-called Helms Amendment to the law governing U.S. aid. That provision states that “no foreign assistance funds may be used to pay for the performance of abortion as a method of family planning or to motivate or coerce any person to practice abortions.”
This rule does not apply to domestic service organizations.
